<image:title>NEWS - The Story Behind Salt Sisters Surf Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>I had already developed a surf therapy curriculum that included walk-and-talk sessions, BWRT components, and writing circles. My original plan was to offer a service for young people that combined 1:1 surf therapy, counselling, and creative expression. When Uncle B approached me about creating a women’s surf therapy programme, it felt like perfect timing. I remember thinking, “I’ve already got the curriculum and the programme structure — I just need to adapt it for women and for a group setting. Let’s go!” That conversation became the spark that helped bring Salt Sisters to life.</image:caption>

<image:title>NEWS - The Story Behind Salt Sisters Surf Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>Sessions begin with the women arriving and catching up informally. We then gather in a circle to check in - sharing what’s alive for us that morning and what we might want to leave on land before heading into the water. Each week, we introduce and discuss a theme connected to both surfing and living well as women. From there the flow of the session looks like this: we do yoga on the beach, then we get changed and go over surf instruction from Kristin, then we surf.</image:caption>

<image:title>NEWS - The Story Behind Salt Sisters Surf Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>Great question — and honestly, I think we nail it. Joy and play is SO IMPORTANT for healing and for women who are healing. Salt Sisters balances fun and therapy by keeping surfing playful, non-competitive and joy-led, while intentionally framing each session around simple therapeutic themes like resilience, self-trust and emotional regulation. The ocean provides the challenge and adventure; we support women to notice what comes up, build coping skills in the moment, and reflect afterwards so learning is integrated naturally - without taking the joy out of the experience.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Surf therapy has the potential to be a powerful, accessible complement to traditional mental-health services in Aotearoa and globally. It offers an early-intervention and preventative pathway that supports mental wellbeing, resilience, social connection and healthy lifestyles, particularly for people who may not engage with clinical services. By combining nature-based activity, community and therapeutic reflection, surf therapy helps bridge the gap between clinical care and everyday wellbeing, strengthening individual and community mental health outcomes.</image:caption>

<image:title>NEWS - The Story Behind Salt Sisters Surf Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>Our vision is for surf therapy to be recognised as a credible, evidence-informed wellbeing intervention in Aotearoa and beyond. The academic article I published in 2022, based on my masters thesis which was an external evaluation of LFM’s Tai Wātea program, was part of achieving that (Leonard et al., 2022). In the next 1–5 years, we hope to see programmes like Salt Sisters become more accessible through partnerships with health, education and community organisations, with strong referral pathways and trained facilitators. Over the longer term, we envision surf therapy embedded within the broader mental-health ecosystem - supporting prevention, early intervention and community wellbeing at scale, while staying grounded in joy, connection and the healing power of the ocean.</image:caption>

<image:title>NEWS - Let’s talk wetsuits: What to know before you zip up</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ll start this by saying, I do not like the cold. I grew up in Queensland, what can I say, and now that I live in Aotearoa, I own enough neoprene to start my own factory! I’ve learned to keep myself warm(ish) and kitted out loads of clients through my business, you might say I’m probably a good person to share some thoughts on wetties.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/61418b15fd5bc4204a28b0b7/dd15956c-03fa-480c-9515-070e1eb845ea/surfing+in+gumboots+not+advised.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>NEWS - Let’s talk wetsuits: What to know before you zip up</image:title>
<image:caption>Let’s start with the obvious. Ladies’ wetsuits, like any other women’s clothing, varies between brands. I’m 3 different sizes in 3 different brands, so ignore the numbers. Similarly, for some reason, certain brands just won’t work for your body shape, whereas they’re a perfect fit for others. There’s no short cut, like learning to surf you just have to try them on…and it’s a hot, sweaty workout! Trying on 3 wetties is about my changing room limit. Unless someone hoses you down in the surf shop, you’ll be forgiven for buying a tight suit, then getting in the water and wishing you’d gone slightly smaller. Think tight lycra, (but not tight camel toe-there is a sweet spot). Top tip: if you can get into it, with no random baggy or wrinkly bits, it’s probably a good fit. Photo: Surfing in gumboots, even in the right size, not advised.</image:caption>

<image:title>NEWS - Let’s talk wetsuits: What to know before you zip up</image:title>
<image:caption>Top tip: Grab a 40L flexi tub from your local Bunnings, Mitre10 or the likes — they’re perfect for post-surf changing and keeping your car dry from wet gear. Fill an insulated flask with warm water before you head out. After your session, pour the warm water into the tub, step in, and enjoy a makeshift foot spa while you peel off your wettie. Bonus: dip those frozen hands too. It’s a game-changer for cold sessions — we promise it’ll take the edge off and make getting changed way less painful.</image:caption>

<image:title>NEWS - Let’s talk wetsuits: What to know before you zip up - What’s a steamer, springy, or shorty?</image:title>
<image:caption>Steamers: Not a boat. Steamers are longlegs and long arms; shorties (i.e. short wetsuit) are short legs and short or long arms; a shorty is also called a springy or springsuit; a long Jane/John is long legs and short arms; there’s ‘boyleg’ or bikini leg…I have a boyleg wetsuit but very feminine legs so whatever! I use my shorty (long arms) in the summer; 3-2 steamer in autumn; add the vest; then 4-3 mid winter to spring – I think the water temp in spring is cooler than mid winter! I’ve not owned a long Jane but I imagine it’d be good in cold water, warm air settings. Top tip: my favourite? No wetsuit, not gonna lie. Take me to the tropics! From left to right: steamer, vest, steamer creatively drying for the next session.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Jaya - I'm a 21-year-old local Dunedin girl. I learned to surf when I was really young and got really into it when I was about 11. My whole life, I have been around the ocean and love to share my passion for the ocean with others. Isla - I’m 22 and grew up in Ōtautahi. I moved to Ōtepoti to finish my studies, and ended up finding it difficult to leave. I’ve always lived next to the ocean and began consistently surfing 4 years ago, then got the bug. My passion lies in food and sharing my love for holistic health. Soul Flow is a community-based initiative that has been held in Ōtepoti, New Zealand, over the past five months. Designed specifically for young wāhine (women). Soul Flow serves as a welcoming space where they can connect with like-minded others, have fun and gain skills to feel more confident in and out of the water.</image:caption>

Link to access the event here!</image:title>
<image:caption>This Saturday, The Aotearoa Womens Surfing Association will host its annual AGM. And you know we love to kōrero about women’s surfing, so this year we’ve decided to host a panel discussion that focuses on the water women of Aotearoa who charge and charter a parallel creative flow alongside their passion for surf. This kōrero aims to highlight how the ocean and the act of surfing fuel the creative passions of women making waves in their respective fields. We are particularly interested in exploring how our connections to the ocean have influenced the work and artistic journey of our panellists. This is a small window into their drive and their adventures. And we couldn’t be prouder. The panel will be hosted by Aotearoa surf icon Jonette Mead who will kōrero with: Cassia Walton and Lauren Crerar, the creative duo behind the recent film ‘Over The Undertow’ which debuted in last year’s Aotearoa Surf Film Festival, and picked up the 2024 People’s Choice Award. Kanari Zukoshi better known as wavebirdkanary, is the driving force behind the film Te Marama – The Truth in Our Waves. <image:title>NEWS - Creative Currents: The intersection of women’s surfing and creativity in Aotearoa - Jonette Mead</image:title>
<image:caption>Jonette Mead, affectionately known as Jonnie, is a pioneering figure in New Zealand’s surfing community. She began surfing in 1963 at Whangamata, inspired by witnessing American surfers skillfully riding the waves. This experience ignited her passion for the sport, leading her to purchase a board the following summer and immerse herself in the world of surfing. In the early days, Jonnie found the surfing community to be welcoming, with little to no issues related to sexism. However, as the 1960s transitioned into the 1970s, she observed the emergence of male elitism within the sport. Despite these challenges, Jonnie’s dedication to surfing remained unwavering. Her competitive spirit led her to the national championships in New Plymouth, where her best finish was a commendable second place, 59 years ago. Beyond competitions, Jonnie played a pivotal role in advocating for women’s surfing. Frustrated by the limited opportunities for female surfers, she established a women’s-only New Zealand tour, significantly enhancing the visibility and recognition of women in the sport. Jonnie’s contributions extend beyond the waves; she is celebrated as a surf administrator, dedicating her efforts to the growth and development of surfing in New Zealand. Her journey reflects resilience, passion, and a commitment to fostering inclusivity within the surfing community.</image:caption>

She serves on the board of the Aotearoa Women's Surfing Association and is a member of the Surf & Boardsport Industry Association's Digital Committee in Australia. <image:caption>Kanari, known online as @wavebirdkanary, is a creative surf filmmaker based in Aotearoa. She is passionate about documenting the experiences and connections of wāhine (women) surfers. Kanari is currently working on a short documentary inspired by Dr. Chanel Phillips' water safety theory, aiming to highlight the importance of water safety within the surfing community. In addition to her filmmaking, Kanari actively engages with the surfing community. She has collaborated with other enthusiasts, capturing moments from their adventures and sharing them through her platform, Eyes Between Lines. Her work not only showcases the beauty of surfing but also emphasizes the significance of camaraderie and shared experiences among surfers. Through her films and photography, Kanari contributes to the visibility and recognition of women's surfing in Aotearoa, inspiring others to connect with the ocean and embrace the surfing lifestyle.</image:caption>

<image:title>NEWS - Riding the slow wave: My healing journey after a concussion - In May last year I posted this on social:</image:title>
<image:caption>“The day after my last post I had one of the best surfs, and one of the worst, copping my board and fins to my head & giving me a concussion that I’m still in the throws of. There’s a moment when you realise that the pain is probably more than a bruise, and you reach up to feel for blood. That’s my hand shot. That moment of realisation. I’ve had a lot of time to sit with my thoughts, think about what’s important and try to heal my beautiful brain. A lot of meditation. A lot of rest. A lot of sunsets and always time for adventure and the ones I love. Everyday she gives me something new, and teaches me a new lesson about going slower, resting, being kind to myself, being grateful, watching and listening. It’s funny how life works out…”</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’m also a massive extrovert, but talking to a person takes a lot of brain energy. It means my brain needs to look for body language, listen out for tones, watch facial expressions, register emotion, formulate sentences, sit up, move. Ten minutes and my brain would shut down. After two months, I could manage a 15 minute phone call, lying down with my eyes closed to reduce the load on my brain. Slowly, that increased over weeks and months…and months. Physical activity got easier too. I could go for short hikes and I started paddling on flat water, initially on my own because I couldn’t manage talking to people. After a couple more months, I started paddling the Okiwi estuary with a close friend (and fellow frother) who was recovering from a gnarly birth. Our respective injuries brought us closer together. What a beautiful gift friendships are.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We both had our first surf back together, on foamies in 10cm slop. Our first surf back on our shorties was a 1 wave wonder followed by a big rest before tapping out to be driven the 1km home. We were like stoked little groms surfing our first waves again. I got so excited I surfed the next day then had a terrible ‘crash’ that flattened me for 3 days. What’s a crash? For me, it’s my brain saying she’s pushed as hard as she can and now she’s shutting down. I can’t speak coherently, I can’t sleep even though I’m so tired, I’m so emotional I just start crying, my heartrate goes through the roof, I can’t make a simple decision like what to have for lunch…I’m basically an overtired toddler.</image:caption>

<image:title>NEWS - Riding the slow wave: My healing journey after a concussion</image:title>
<image:caption>If 24 March 2024 was day zero – zero activity, zero socialising, zero surfing, zero work – then for the past year I’ve been growing from zero to today. I’m happy with where my surfing is at, compared to pre-injury. I surf under 4 foot and avoid crowds, low light and messy surf – those conditions work my brain so much that it’s more hard work than fun. My snaps are getting a bit more grunt back but I’m not trying airs or anything as ambitious as before. I’ve gone from months off work to 15mins/day to where I am now; full time and taking each day slowly and cautiously. It’s a vigilance that is tiring in itself. My exercise load is kind of back to pre-injury, though I can’t just push myself like I used to. I need to adapt day to day, respond to my body and not overload my brain. I’m still at risk of those crashes but at least now they might only last a night.</image:caption>

We got our first boards in 1963. This was when I felt the passion being amongst the waves and the sensation of personal fulfilment in the wonderful ocean environment.</image:title>

<image:title>NEWS - The call of the sea - I learnt a lot from the Aussie surfers, in particular Bob McTavish when he was shaping boards here. When we happened to be surfing in the same spot he quietly gave me some tips on getting the best out of a wave. This definitely gave me my assertive style of surfing and put me on the road to gaining a NZ Women’s title in 1967.</image:title>

<image:caption>We caught up with Nina from Raglan’s newest surf club, affectionately known as ‘The Dames’. It’s a non-for-profit surf club with the goal of providing opportunities for local female surfers to build their confidence in the water in a safe environment, supported by an awesome community of wāhine around them. They run weekly sessions in the water, but have also started running some on land sessions too, where club members can get better at reading surf reports, perfecting etiquette, and also just sit back and chat about surfing over a shared pizza at Indi’s at the end of the week.</image:caption>

<image:title>NEWS - Herstory: Surfing in the late 1960s and early 1970s</image:title>
<image:caption>My first fibreglassed board was 9’0 and was a secondhand one stringer Atlas Woods with one wooden/skeg/fin. It was so wide I carried it miles and miles on my head as my arm could not reach around it. I presented my parents with the board that I’d purchased from Marine Sports using the wages I saved over a couple of summers, from rolling ice creams in a local dairy and hamburger outlet. It wasn’t a fashionable board. Fashionable boards were 9’6 and had multiple stringers. But at 5’2 /157 cm and being very small there was no way I could manage a bigger board. A few years later Bob Davies made me custom boards and I could do more than big bottom turns. Image: Su Hodkinson and her first board, Mt Maunganui 1964</image:caption>
